The city of Caldwell, Idaho owes much of it growth to the Union Pacific Railroad that runs parallel to the city. In fact, the original boundaries of the city in 1890 were completely defined by a railroad on every side. Early travelers came to the Treasure Valley for the mining possibilities in the Boise River, yet most of Caldwell’s population growth was due to the railroad companies desire to bring growth to the area. If numbers were the only calculation, it’s fair to say they succeeded in their goal. Between 1890 and 1905, there were at most 1,000 residents. Then, in just the three years between 1905 and 1908, the city exploded to over 5,000 residents. It’s continued to grow, and is now home to more than 49,000 residents. Wherever you look, Caldwell holds true to its heritage. Historic buildings stand strong in downtown, and beautifully crafted museums will guide you through a history lesson. Yet, for all the history Caldwell offers, there is plenty of modern day fun to be had too. From the Caldwell Night Rodeo and Canyon County Fair to grand Cinco de Mayo celebrations, there is something for everyone. In fact, America’s Promise magazine recently named Caldwell one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People.” Caldwell is home to the oldest institution of higher education in the state. The College of Idaho was established in 1891, and is still known has one of the best liberal art schools in the United States. It educates an average 1,050 students each year from over 45 countries. Caldwell is still a strong agricultural community. The JR Simplot Foundation was birthed here. Farms and vineyards surround the city on all sides, including the worldly known and award winning St. Chapelle Vineyard. It still has a small town feel, but with many large city amenities. Multiple private and nationally known restaurants are scattered throughout the town, as well as a wide variety of shopping opportunities
